planqc opens new company headquarters in Garching near Munich

September 25, 2024

planqc has opened its new company headquarters in Garching near Munich, with Bavaria’s Minister President Dr. Markus Söder attending the opening celebration. In the newly converted 1,400 m² laboratory and office space, planqc is developing advanced quantum computers that store information in individual atoms as qubits. This particularly scalable approach marks a significant step toward application-ready quantum computers “Made in Germany,” supporting Bavaria’s goal of fostering high-tech innovation.

”The Bavarian high-tech start-up planqc from Garching near Munich is working on quantum computers that enable previously unthinkable computing power and a completely new type of research. With the Bavarian High-Tech Agenda, we are deliberately focusing on science and start-ups. The jobs and prosperity of the future should emerge from scientific research. This is the only way we can remain internationally competitive,“ emphasized Dr. Markus Söder, Minister President of Bavaria, MdL (CSU) at the opening ceremony on September 25. “We are investing a total of 5.5 billion euros to support start-ups so that they can scale in Bavaria rather than move abroad. True to the motto: Houston, we have a problem! And Bavaria is the solution.”

The three founders Dr. Alexander Glätzle, Dr. Johannes Zeiher and Dr. Sebastian Blatt presented exciting insights into planqc's current projects and the great potential of quantum computing for areas such as the development of new drugs and materials, aerospace, the automotive industry, climate research and artificial intelligence to the more than 200 guests from politics, science and industry as well as local neighbors. Dr. Glätzle described moving into the new company headquarters as a step in planqc’s journey towards “solving some of the biggest problems for mankind that the best supercomputers have so far not been able to tackle.”

A special highlight of the event was the presentation of a 3D model of the quantum computer, which gave guests a vivid idea of planqc’s innovative technology. Visually accompanied by a laser show, quantum experts explained the complex concepts of quantum computing, answering many open questions and inspiring the audience.

Several quantum computers are currently in development at the new company headquarters. As part of government contracts worth around 50 million euros, planqc will deliver a universally programmable quantum computer with 1,000 qubits to the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) and install a system with 100 qubits directly at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Another quantum computer will remain at planqc's headquarters to offer cloud access to customers from industry and science.

The official part of the event was followed by a lively celebration, where guests were able to exchange ideas over snacks and drinks. The informal atmosphere encouraged dialog between participants and opened up new opportunities for future cooperation.

After the recent Series A financing round of 50 million euros, the opening of the new company headquarters is a significant milestone for the planqc team and Dr. Glätzle outlined “building quantum computers is an Apollo mission”.
